Thurrock Yacht Club's moorings played host to a very special visitor creating a very special world first!
Trans-Atlantic rower Mark Delstanche stopped over in Grays on the final stretch of his epic New York to London challenge. He is the first person in history to row solo and unaided from the mainland USA, to the mainland UK.
He rowed up the Thames in his distinctive yellow and white boat “Square Peg”, and picked up a mooring at Thurrock Yacht Club for a brief stay to await a favourable tide for the last leg up to Tower Bridge. For the technically minded amongst us, the craft is fitted with a very special drive system which allows a propellor to be driven from a rowing machine mounted inside the boat. We will have to wait to see if that idea catches on for our tenders!
Mark finished his epic journey at Tower Bridge on 19th September. Unfortunately the conditions of the challenge meant we could not offer Mark our customary hospitality, a salute with the race siren being the best we could muster, but we are very proud to have been a very small part of his inspirational story.
