The Mayors Cup is raced each year on the nearest Saturday to May the 1st. It was originally established for young racers aged under 20, but in 1991 the format changed to focus on cruisers of all ages.
Course: Jenningtree, White Hart
Date: 4 May 2019
Tide: HW 1349
Wind: N 4-6
A gusty day for the second trophy race of the season saw only 4 boats braving the elements to compete.
High Spirits showed all the temperament of a true thoroughbred, retiring before the start following problems putting a reef in.
Freedom, Hinemoa and Solvik all managed to shorten their canvas, working around another race coming up from Gravesend which magically appeared on our start line just as the gun was fired.
Things got lumpy heading up St Clements reach, with Freedom characteristically claiming a lead, Hinemoa just about managing to keep up with the Gravesend fleet and Solvik doggedly following behind.
One massive squall, horizontal hail, and a cockpit full of water saw Hinemoa call it a day just off the Cobelfret terminal. Solvik downed sails about the same time, following a "sequence of unfortunate events".
Freedom therefore proceeded around uncontested but taking a soaking to claim line and handicap honours.
If anybody finds a hat or boat hook floating around - please contact Solvik!
