Course: Stoneness, Tugbuoy (5), St Clements, Stoneness, Tugbuoy 5,White Hart
Date: 13 July 2019
Good tides and fickle winds marked this years rescheduled Founders Cup. This race coincided with the annual East Coast Cruise, but four boats denied themselves the pleasure of the Essex Coast to stay behind and race for glory.
Given the light winds the Race Officer decided to start 10 minutes early. Blue Victa made the most of start taking advantage of slack water to be first across the line for the beat up to Stoneness. High Spirits started from further towards the Essex shore but soon powered to the front.
Hinemoa and Fleur de Leigh traded places a few times but the first leg was mainly one long slow drift up to the mark.
Blue Victa just about managed to stay in touch with High Spirits, rumour has it that they may have been hampered by a crew who struggled to get the concept of a zig zag course, but then this was probably offset by a high amount of onboard generated wind.
Fleur de Leigh only managed to overtake Hinemoa in the final furlong, blaming a dirty bottom for their sluggish performance. What more can we say about that ?
All in all a frustrating race, but one that challenged boats and crews. There were surprisingly few shipping movements to disrupt the fleet which was probably just as well in the conditions.
Line honours went to High Spirits, with Blue Victa claiming overall honours on corrected time.
