team

One key message from the RYA survey that we undertook in 2018 was that members felt there was more that the could do to create crewing opportunities. We are therefore pleased to launch the "Team Scheme" - our first development programme for 2019.

Any member who is looking for crew, or looking for a regular berth is encouraged to participate.

The purpose of the scheme is to exploit the team sport nature of sailing by encouraging participation in racing, and by extension to promote the club and attract new members.

Specifically the scheme sets out to:

  • Build on, and complement the crew membership scheme

  • Encourage more members to participate in racing

  • Match boats and crew

  • Develop more competitive club racing

  • Increase TYC participation in open races

  • Provide mentoring and development opportunities for crew members

  • Allow members more opportunities to get on the water and enjoy sailing

General

The general outline and structure of the scheme is:

  • The scheme brings skippers and crews together as a team for the duration of one season.

  • Skippers will register on the scheme at the start of the calendar year, and call for crew to form the rest of team through recognised club channels.

  • Teams will compete in one or more series which at the time of writing may be:

    • Thursday night series

    • Saturday series

    • Trophies (commitment to race for all trophies)

  • Teams may have different crews for different series.

  • Teams are expected to enter at least one open event hosted by another club during the course of the season. This may or may not involve sailing on the regular boat.

  • In the event that the skipper is rostered as race officer, the remainder of the team are expected to fulfil the role of assistant race officers.

Guidance for Skippers

Skippers who participate in the scheme will be expected to:

  • Meet the legal and traditional requirements for commanding a vessel.

  • Ensure their boat is fit for purpose, properly maintained and adequately insured for racing.

  • Make best endeavours to start every race in the selected series, except where required to fulfil any associated race duties by the club (e.g. race officer)

  • Ensure crew gain experience of racing in all stations on the boat, including helming.

  • Make every endeavour to ensure their crew gain experience pertinent to any sailing qualification they are pursuing.

  • Pay a fair share of any entry fee for individual races hosted by TYC or any other organisation.

  • Manage the logistics and co-ordination of their team

Guidance for Crew

Crew who participate in the scheme will be expected to:

  • Make best endeavours to start every race in the nominated series

  • Develop their own sailing skills and compete to their best ability.

  • Provide their own life jacket and foul weather gear.

  • Compete in all stations on the boat over the course of the series.

  • Pay a fair share of any entry fee for individual races hosted by TYC or any other organisation.
